U.S. equities traded cautiously on Friday as investors awaited the latest Nonfarm Payrolls report, a key release expected to shape expectations for the Federal Reserve's next policy decision. Futures for the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq Composite were little changed after a mixed session on Thursday, with traders avoiding large positions ahead of the closely watched employment data. Despite the recent pullback, all three major indexes remain on track to post strong weekly gains, supported by upbeat corporate earnings and continued optimism surrounding artificial intelligence investments.
Investor sentiment has been driven by a combination of resilient earnings and expectations that the U.S. economy continues to expand despite elevated interest rates. However, today's labor market report could significantly alter those expectations. A stronger-than-expected jobs number may reinforce the case for keeping monetary policy restrictive, while softer employment growth could increase speculation that the Fed may pause further tightening. Treasury yields were broadly stable as traders waited for fresh economic signals.
From a technical perspective, the S&P 500 remains above its 20-day and 50-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), indicating that the medium-term uptrend remains intact despite recent consolidation. Immediate resistance is located near the recent record highs, while initial support lies around the 20-day EMA. Momentum indicators continue to hold in bullish territory, suggesting buyers remain in control unless the index breaks below short-term support. A strong jobs report could trigger renewed volatility and determine whether equities resume their rally or enter a broader correction.
