U.S. Stocks: S&P 500 and Nasdaq Hold Near Records as Inflation Looms

By Saqib Iqbal1 min read
  • Futures edge higher: S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures gained modestly Monday.
  • Records remain close: The S&P 500 recently closed at another record high.
  • Inflation is next: Investors are preparing for crucial U.S. inflation data later this week.

S&P 500 Fundamental Analysis

U.S. equity markets begin the week close to record territory as investors weigh strong corporate earnings against renewed geopolitical uncertainty. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures edged higher Monday while markets monitored developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and potential changes to regional shipping conditions.

Corporate earnings remain a major source of support. According to LSEG data cited by Reuters, 85.1% of companies reporting results have exceeded earnings expectations, reinforcing the bullish backdrop for equities. At the same time, weaker July employment data has reduced expectations for near-term interest-rate pressure.

The next major catalyst is U.S. inflation data, which could influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy and potentially determine whether stocks extend their record-setting advance.

S&P 500 Technical Analysis

The S&P 500 remains in a bullish structure after reaching a record close last week. With the index holding above its recent breakout zone, buyers remain in control.

The immediate focus is the latest record high, while the previous breakout area becomes the first important support. A sustained move to new highs would reinforce the bullish trend, while a break below short-term support could trigger profit-taking.

Technology stocks remain particularly important because continued AI enthusiasm has been a major driver of market performance.
