- EUR/JPY remains elevated: The pair is holding around the 182–183 area as the euro maintains its advantage over the yen.
- Yen intervention is still a major risk: Recent coordinated currency action has made traders cautious about pushing EUR/JPY too aggressively higher.
- 183.70 is the immediate hurdle: A sustained break could reopen the path toward 185, while 182 remains important support.
EURJPY Fundamental Analysis
EUR/JPY remains one of the more closely watched European-Japanese crosses as markets continue to assess the consequences of Japan's aggressive efforts to stabilize the yen. The pair has recently recovered toward the 182–183 area, with the euro benefiting from the yen's continued structural weakness. Official euro reference data show the euro has risen from around 180.73 at the beginning of August to 183.72 by August 11, highlighting the speed of the recent move.
The yen's weakness has become particularly complicated because Japanese authorities are no longer relying exclusively on verbal intervention. Japan carried out a record single-day intervention in April, while reports indicate that further large-scale intervention activity took place during late July. The United States has also been involved in supporting the yen, creating an unusual level of policy coordination.
That development creates an important ceiling for EUR/JPY. Under normal circumstances, widening interest-rate differentials could encourage traders to maintain long euro/yen positions. But intervention risk means that an apparently strong bullish trend can reverse very quickly if Japanese authorities become concerned about excessive yen depreciation.
The euro has its own support from expectations that European monetary policy may remain relatively firm. At the same time, the broader dollar weakness following softer U.S. employment data has influenced global currency positioning and reduced some of the pressure on major currencies.
The fundamental balance is therefore unusual. The euro retains an interest-rate advantage, but the yen has an increasingly powerful policy backstop.
EURJPY Technical Analysis

EUR/JPY is currently trading close to the 182–183 region, with the pair maintaining the broader recovery that began after the early-August correction. The key short-term resistance is around 183.70–184.00, an area that has repeatedly attracted selling interest.
A decisive daily close above 184.00 would strengthen the bullish structure and could bring 185.00 into focus. Above that level, the market could begin targeting the 186.00–187.00 region.
On the downside, 182.00 is the first important support. Holding above it would keep buyers in control, while a break below could send the cross toward 180.50–181.00.
The most important technical warning is that intervention headlines could produce unusually large candles and invalidate conventional breakout signals. Traders should therefore treat moves through 184 with caution rather than assuming every upside breakout will develop into a sustained trend.
For now, the technical bias remains cautiously bullish above 182, but the fundamental intervention risk makes the upside increasingly sensitive.
