Corn: Futures Hold Near $4.40 Ahead of Crucial USDA Supply Report

By Saqib Iqbal2 min read

Corn futures are stabilizing, with December contracts holding around the $4.40–4.45 area after recent weakness, as traders prepare for the USDA's August WASDE report. Today's data will provide updated estimates for yields, production and demand, with $4.40 acting as critical support for a potential rebound.

Corn Fundamental Analysis

Corn futures are entering one of the most important sessions of the month as traders prepare for the USDA's August World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report.

December corn has been trading around the $4.40-4.45 per bushel area, after recently falling to a four-week low. The market has been unusually cautious because today's report will provide one of the first detailed assessments of state-by-state yield expectations for the new crop.

Weather remains a major variable.

Recent rainfall and milder temperatures have eased some of the crop stress created by excessive heat and dryness across parts of the U.S. Midwest. However, drought conditions continue to affect a significant portion of the U.S. corn crop, meaning the final production outlook remains uncertain.

Private crop estimates have also produced mixed signals. One recent survey estimated corn yields at approximately 184.8 bushels per acre, above the trend-line estimate but below last year's final yield. That creates uncertainty over whether the USDA will make a significant adjustment in today's report.

Demand is another important factor.

U.S. corn export inspections have been running at historically strong levels, creating the possibility that USDA could increase its export expectations. Strong exports would provide a bullish counterweight to potentially large production.

The market is therefore facing two competing forces: potentially strong crop yields versus robust demand.

If the USDA reports higher-than-expected production while keeping demand estimates unchanged, corn could come under renewed selling pressure. A lower yield estimate combined with stronger exports would create a much more bullish setup.

The weather outlook after today's report will remain important because crop conditions can still change significantly before harvest.

Corn Technical Analysis

Corn is trading around $4.38-4.40, with the market attempting to stabilize after its recent decline.

The first technical level to watch is $4.40. A sustained move back above this area would improve the short-term structure and could allow prices to target $4.50-4.55.

A stronger breakout through $4.55 would open the way toward $4.65-4.70.

On the downside, a decisive break below $4.35 would signal that sellers remain in control. That could expose $4.25-4.30, followed by the psychological $4.00 region.

Today's USDA report could produce a sharp move through either side of the range.

The most constructive setup would be a bearish initial reaction followed by a rapid recovery above $4.40, suggesting that buyers are absorbing fresh supply estimates.

Conversely, a daily close below $4.35 would indicate that the market has interpreted the report as fundamentally bearish.

For now, corn is in a wait-and-see technical structure, with $4.40 acting as the immediate pivot and today's USDA report providing the potential catalyst for the next major move.
