- USD/JPY is back near 159: The yen weakened beyond 159 per dollar as oil prices and U.S.-Iran tensions supported the dollar.
- Intervention remains a major risk: Japanese authorities have already intervened, making another sharp yen selloff particularly sensitive.
- 159–160 is the key zone: A sustained break above 160 could extend the dollar's recovery, while rejection may trigger another yen rebound.
USD/JPY Fundamental Analysis
USD/JPY is trading around the 159 area on August 11, with the yen under renewed pressure as higher oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty support demand for the U.S. dollar. The pair has moved back toward levels that have previously attracted intense attention from Japanese authorities, leaving traders particularly cautious about chasing the latest move higher.
The immediate macro driver is the renewed uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-Iran negotiations. Oil prices have climbed as hopes for a quick agreement and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have weakened. Higher energy prices can raise inflation expectations and potentially reduce the likelihood of rapid monetary easing, supporting the dollar through higher expected U.S. yields.
At the same time, the yen faces a difficult policy backdrop. Japanese authorities have already demonstrated their willingness to intervene in foreign-exchange markets, and recent coordinated intervention has made traders much more sensitive to excessive yen depreciation. That creates an unusual situation for USD/JPY: the fundamental yield advantage can support the dollar, but a sharp move higher could itself increase intervention risk.
The U.S. inflation report is therefore the next major catalyst. A hotter-than-expected CPI reading could push Treasury yields and the dollar higher, potentially challenging the yen further. A softer inflation reading could have the opposite effect by reviving expectations for easier Federal Reserve policy.
USD/JPY Technical Analysis

Technically, 159.00–160.00 is the critical resistance area. USD/JPY has recovered toward 159 after the yen's earlier strengthening, but a sustained daily close above 160.00 would provide a much stronger bullish signal.
If buyers establish a position above 160, the next upside zone could develop around 161.50–162.00. However, the psychological importance of 160 and the intervention risk surrounding extreme yen weakness make a clean breakout less straightforward than a normal technical resistance break.
On the downside, 158.00 is the first area to watch. A break below it would suggest that sellers are regaining control and could expose 156.50–157.00. A deeper decline would also strengthen the case for a broader yen recovery.
The current setup is therefore fundamentally bullish for USD/JPY but technically vulnerable to a sharp reversal. Traders should watch the reaction around 159–160 rather than assuming that a break higher will automatically produce a sustained trend.
