USD/CAD: Canadian Dollar Faces Fresh Test as Oil Rallies and U.S. CPI Looms

By Saqib Iqbal2 min read
  • USD/CAD remains volatile: The Canadian dollar is being pulled between stronger oil prices and renewed U.S. dollar demand.
  • Oil is supporting CAD: Crude has climbed sharply as Middle East tensions raise concerns about global energy supplies.
  • U.S. CPI is the immediate catalyst: A hotter inflation reading could strengthen the dollar and push USD/CAD higher.

USD/CAD Fundamental Analysis

USD/CAD is entering Wednesday's session with traders balancing two competing forces: a stronger U.S. dollar and a Canadian dollar receiving support from the latest surge in crude oil.

Oil prices have risen sharply this week as geopolitical tensions continue to threaten shipping routes and energy supplies. U.S. crude was trading near $84 per barrel on August 12, while Brent approached $90, providing an important source of support for commodity-linked currencies such as the Canadian dollar.

Canada's economy remains highly sensitive to energy prices because crude oil and other commodities represent a significant part of the country's export base. When oil rises sharply, Canada's trade position can improve and demand for the Canadian dollar can increase.

However, the U.S. dollar has its own catalyst today. Markets are waiting for the latest U.S. CPI report, which could have a major influence on expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

The latest U.S. employment report was weaker than expected, increasing speculation that the Fed could eventually move toward lower interest rates. But rising energy prices are creating a complication because they could keep inflation elevated.

A hotter CPI number would likely push Treasury yields higher and strengthen the dollar, creating upside pressure on USD/CAD. A softer reading could produce the opposite reaction and allow the Canadian dollar to benefit from the combination of weaker U.S. rate expectations and stronger oil.

The Bank of Canada will also be monitoring the inflation and growth backdrop carefully. If domestic economic conditions remain soft while energy prices rise, policymakers face a difficult balance between supporting growth and managing inflation.

For now, oil is providing a meaningful fundamental cushion for CAD, but today's U.S. inflation report could temporarily overpower that influence.

USD/CAD Technical Analysis

USD/CAD is approaching a technically important decision zone after recent volatility. The pair's direction is increasingly dependent on whether buyers can regain control above the 1.3800 area.

A sustained move above 1.3800 would strengthen the short-term bullish structure and could expose 1.3900, followed by the psychologically important 1.4000 region.

The alternative scenario is a rejection below 1.3800. In that case, sellers could push the pair toward 1.3700, with a deeper correction potentially targeting 1.3600–1.3650.

Momentum should be monitored closely because USD/CAD is currently caught between dollar strength and oil-driven Canadian-dollar demand.

A softer U.S. CPI combined with continued oil strength would be the most bearish scenario for USD/CAD. Conversely, hotter inflation and rising U.S. yields could overpower the Canadian dollar's oil advantage.

The immediate technical bias is therefore neutral, with 1.3800 acting as the key breakout level.
