- $500 is the key level: Holding above this psychological threshold could keep the post-earnings rally intact.
MSFT Fundamental Analysis
Microsoft is one of the strongest major technology stocks entering the second half of August, with shares having climbed approximately 30% since the company's strong fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report. The rally reflects renewed confidence that Microsoft's enormous AI investments are beginning to translate into sustainable cloud growth rather than simply creating a costly infrastructure buildout.
The company's latest results provided a major fundamental catalyst. Microsoft reported approximately $90 billion in quarterly revenue, while Azure growth reached around 43% in constant-currency terms. The strength of Azure is particularly important because cloud computing remains the foundation through which Microsoft monetizes its growing artificial-intelligence ecosystem.
Another important figure is Microsoft's commercial backlog, which has expanded significantly. Strong future commitments give investors greater visibility into upcoming revenue, helping explain why sentiment has improved so quickly following the earnings release.
The market's biggest concern has been capital expenditure. Microsoft has committed enormous sums to data centers, chips and AI infrastructure, raising questions about whether the company could eventually build more capacity than customers require.
That concern has been challenged by fresh analysis arguing that Microsoft's infrastructure commitments are flexible and that its data centers can serve both AI and traditional cloud workloads. Bernstein has now raised its Microsoft price target to $660, arguing that fears over excessive AI capacity are overstated.
The fundamental story therefore remains centered on one question: can Microsoft's AI spending continue producing sufficiently strong Azure and cloud growth to justify the investment? So far, the latest earnings numbers are encouraging.
MSFT Technical Analysis

Microsoft has established a powerful short-term uptrend after breaking above the $466 region following its earnings release. The stock has since continued higher, showing that buyers remain willing to chase the shares after the initial breakout.
The psychological $500 level is now the key technical battleground. Holding above $500 would strengthen the post-earnings structure and potentially allow the stock to challenge $510–515, followed by higher territory if momentum remains strong.
A rejection around $500 would not necessarily invalidate the bullish trend. The first important support would be around $480, followed by the previous breakout zone near $466.
The more important technical risk would come from a sustained move below $466. That would suggest the earnings-driven breakout is losing strength and could trigger a deeper consolidation.
For now, momentum remains clearly constructive. The main risk is not the underlying trend but the speed of the recent advance, which increases the possibility of profit-taking even if the longer-term fundamentals remain strong.
