Copper: Prices Retreat From Record High as Supply Concerns Clash With Profit-Taking

By Saqib Iqbal2 min read
  • Copper remains near record territory: Prices recently reached a fresh Comex record before retreating.
  • Supply remains tight: Global production concerns and tariff uncertainty continue supporting the metal.
  • $6.50 is the immediate pivot: Holding this area could preserve the bullish trend, while a break risks deeper consolidation.

Copper Fundamental Analysis

Copper is experiencing one of its most volatile periods of 2026 after prices reached a fresh record before retreating on August 13.

Copper recently touched approximately $6.7140 per pound on Comex, equivalent to around $14,800 per metric tonne, as traders reacted to tighter supply expectations and a softer U.S. inflation backdrop.

The fundamental story remains exceptionally strong.

Copper demand continues to benefit from the global expansion of electricity infrastructure, renewable-energy systems, electric vehicles and data centers. Artificial-intelligence infrastructure is particularly important because large data centers require enormous quantities of copper for power distribution and cooling systems.

Supply, meanwhile, is struggling to keep pace.

Mine disruptions and limited new production capacity have increased concerns about future availability. The uncertainty surrounding potential U.S. tariffs has added another layer of volatility because changes in import policy can dramatically alter regional copper premiums and inventories.

The latest U.S. inflation data have also provided some support for industrial metals by reducing concerns about an aggressively restrictive Federal Reserve.

However, copper's explosive rally has created a different problem: valuation.

Prices have risen more than 45% year over year, according to recent market data, making the metal vulnerable to profit-taking even if the longer-term fundamentals remain constructive.

The market is therefore dealing with two opposing forces.

Long-term supply constraints and strong structural demand favor higher prices, while the magnitude of the recent rally increases the probability of a short-term correction.

China remains another crucial factor. Any deterioration in Chinese industrial demand could quickly expose the market's stretched positioning.

For now, copper remains fundamentally bullish, but the near-term chart is increasingly vulnerable to consolidation.

Copper Technical Analysis

Copper is trading around $6.50–$6.55 per pound after pulling back from its record near $6.71. Recent data show copper down around 1% on the session while remaining strongly higher over both the monthly and yearly periods.

The immediate support zone is $6.45–$6.50.

Holding this region would suggest that the recent decline is simply profit-taking after the record breakout. A recovery above $6.60 would strengthen the bullish structure and put the $6.70 record back into focus.

A fresh breakout above $6.71 would establish another all-time high and could trigger a new momentum leg.

The bearish scenario develops below $6.45. A sustained breakdown could send copper toward $6.25–6.30, with $6.00 becoming an important psychological support level if selling accelerates.

The chart remains bullish overall, but momentum has become stretched.

$6.50 is therefore the key short-term pivot. Holding above it keeps the record-high breakout intact, while losing it would suggest that copper needs a deeper correction before buyers return.
