Fundamental Analysis: Gold (XAU/USD)
The official sector is the story. Central banks purchased a record 288.9 tonnes in the second quarter, a 62% increase on the same period last year, with Poland and China the largest buyers. That is price-insensitive demand driven by reserve diversification rather than by yield expectations, and it establishes a floor beneath the market that speculative flows do not have to supply.
The rate side has turned supportive too, though less durably. The Federal Reserve is holding at 3.50–3.75% for a fifth consecutive meeting, and while three members dissented in July in favour of a hike, July CPI at 3.4% against 3.5% in June, softer retail sales and slipping consumer sentiment pushed markets to price out a September increase. Lower expected policy rates mean lower real yields, which reduces the cost of holding a non-yielding asset.
The tension is that inflation at 3.4% remains well above target and the dissents were for tightening, not easing. If the September data turns, the rate-cut premium currently in the price comes out quickly. That is why bullion is consolidating near record levels rather than extending: the structural bid is intact, but the cyclical argument is finely balanced.
Technical Analysis: Gold (XAU/USD)

The advance that produced this structure began near 4,020 at the start of August and ran almost without interruption to a 4,425 high on 11 August. Since then the market has traded a wide sideways range, and the latest four-hour bar closed at 4,343.79 after a 4,361.99 high. Price sits directly on the 4,341.99 moving average, with 4,374.64 rolling over above and 4,273.59 and 4,225.56 still climbing beneath.
Resistance is 4,374.64 first, then the 4,400 handle and the 4,425 range high. Support is 4,341.99 immediately, then 4,300 and the 4,273.59 average. A four-hour close below 4,273.59 would break the rising structure that has held since the start of the month and invalidate the consolidation read.
