Applied Materials (AMAT): Stock Faces Major AI Earnings Test as Chip Demand Accelerates

By Saqib Iqbal2 min read
  • AMAT is approaching earnings: Applied Materials reports fiscal Q3 results today, making the stock one of the market's biggest semiconductor catalysts.
  • AI chip spending is the focus: Demand for advanced packaging and semiconductor equipment remains strong.
  • $540 is the key pivot: Holding this region could support another recovery, while a break lower risks a deeper correction.

AMAT Fundamental Analysis

Applied Materials is heading into a major earnings event on August 13, with investors watching closely for evidence that the AI infrastructure boom continues to translate into stronger semiconductor-equipment demand. The company confirmed that its fiscal third-quarter results will be released today.

The timing is important because semiconductor manufacturers continue increasing investment in advanced chips, memory and packaging technologies required for artificial intelligence.

Applied Materials has recently introduced new systems designed specifically to accelerate DRAM production and advanced packaging for AI chips, highlighting how the company is positioning itself around the next phase of AI-related semiconductor investment.

The previous quarter also provided a strong foundation. Applied Materials reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of approximately $7.91 billion, above expectations, while earnings per share came in at $2.86.

The company has now beaten earnings expectations for several consecutive quarters, raising the bar for today's report.

Investors are likely to focus on three things: semiconductor equipment orders, AI-related demand and management's outlook for the remainder of 2026.

The stock's earlier rally has also created a valuation challenge. AMAT has gained substantially this year but remains below its previous peak, meaning investors are effectively deciding whether the recent pullback represents an opportunity or the beginning of a larger correction.

The AI investment cycle remains the strongest fundamental argument for the bulls. However, any evidence of slowing orders or weaker guidance could trigger aggressive profit-taking.

AMAT Technical Analysis

AMAT is approaching the $540 area, which has become an important short-term pivot after the stock pulled back significantly from its earlier peak. Recent analysis has identified the region around $534 as a key decision point ahead of earnings.

A strong earnings reaction above $550 would improve the technical structure and could put $575–600 into focus.

The major bullish target would then become the previous high region, although reaching it would require sustained semiconductor-sector strength.

On the downside, $525–530 is the first important support. A decisive break below that area could expose $500–510.

Because earnings are due today, volatility could be substantially higher than normal.

The technical setup therefore depends heavily on the earnings reaction. A move above $550 would signal renewed buyer control, while a break below $525 would suggest that the previous correction is extending.
