Gold 4-hour chart showing bullion at 4,441 after a sharp reversal from the 4,690 record high

Gold Forecast: 4,441 Rebuilds After the 4,690 Record Fails

By Saqib Iqbal2 min read
  • Gold trades at 4,441, down 0.32% on the day and rebuilding after a violent Friday reversal from the 4,690 record.
  • Bullion is still up roughly 16% on the month and 36% over twelve months on an energy-led global inflation shock.
  • The 4,459 average is the level that decides the next move; reclaim it and the 4,535 band comes back into play.

Fundamental Analysis: Gold

The bull case has been built on an inflation problem that central banks did not create and cannot easily fix. Disruption to Gulf energy flows has pushed crude sharply higher, and that has fed straight through into headline prices: US PCE ran at 3.7% over twelve months, UK CPI rose to 2.9% in July on a 14.7% monthly jump in gas prices, and euro area HICP is tracking near 3.2%. Supply-driven inflation is precisely the environment in which a non-yielding real asset outperforms, and gold's 36% twelve-month gain reflects it.

Friday supplied the counterweight. Chair Kevin Warsh used his Jackson Hole keynote to describe inflation as the Fed's paramount concern and to signal a discretionary, data-dependent approach in place of forward guidance, and pricing for a September rate increase jumped. Higher nominal rates lift the opportunity cost of holding bullion directly, and the metal lost about 250 dollars from its high within hours. That is a positioning flush rather than a change of thesis.

Which force wins depends on whether the Fed can raise rates faster than inflation expectations rise. If it can, real yields climb and gold consolidates; if the energy shock keeps outrunning policy, the hedge demand that drove the past three months persists. The market will get its first read from this week's US employment data, with the August payrolls consensus near 45,000, and a decisive answer only at the September meeting.

The 4-hour chart shows a persistent advance from the 4,080 area on 5 August, a mid-month consolidation near 4,220, and then an acceleration from 19 August that carried price to the 4,690 record on 25 August. Friday's single wide bar erased three sessions of that work, driving through the whole moving-average band to 4,428.70 before stabilising. Price at 4,441 now sits under averages at 4,459, 4,535 and 4,540, with only the slowest at 4,359 beneath the market.

Resistance is 4,459 first, then the tight 4,535-4,540 band that will cap any recovery attempt, with 4,600 the level that would signal the record is being retested. Support is Friday's 4,428.70 low, then the 4,400 handle, with 4,359 the deeper line. A four-hour close beneath 4,359 invalidates the uptrend read and opens the 4,300 shelf.
